本草木塔は、文政元年(1818)の建立であり、大荒沢不動尊への旧参道沿いに建立されている。
碑文は中央に横長調の一杯彫による「草木供養塔」と刻まれ、向かって右側に建立年月である「文政元年8月」、左側に建立者の「村中」と銘記されている。
本塔は大荒沢不動尊への林道沿いに意図的に建立されたとみられ、不動尊内の類似塔である「杉供養塔」とともにこの沢を中心に林業に従事していた人々の木々への弔いや感謝の象徴であったと思われる。
No.8 Ōarasawa SOMOKUTO (AD 1818)
This SOMOKUTO was erected in AD 1818 and stands along the former approach route to Ōarazawa Fudō Shrine.
At the center of the stone is engraved “SOMOKUKUYOTO” in a horizontally elongated style using the ichihai-bori (single-stroke carving) technique.
On the right side is inscribed “August 1818,” indicating the date of construction, and on the left side is inscribed “Entire Village,” identifying the builders.
This monument appears to have been deliberately placed along the forest road leading to Ōarazawa Fudō.
Together with a similar monument within the shrine precincts known as the “Cedar Memorial Tower,” it is believed to have symbolized prayers for the souls of felled trees and expressions of gratitude by people engaged in forestry in this valley.
