本草木塔は、安永9年(1780)の建立で、現在確認されているものでは塩地平の草木塔と並んで最古である。もとは湯の花橋付近にあったものを他の2基の石塔とともに当地へと移設されたといわれている。
碑文は塔頂部に阿閦如来を意味する梵字（種子）の「ウン」を置き、中央に「一佛成道観見法界草木国土悉皆成仏」と日本仏教の一節が刻まれている。向かって右側に「安永九庚子天」、「講中」、左側に「8月1日」、「口田沢村」とあり、建立年月日と建立者がわかる。本草木塔のように経文のみが刻まれているものは他にみられず貴重である。
塔頂部の種子や隣接する「湯殿山三十三度参詣供」と「高平山大明神」の石塔からは山岳信仰を強く意識していることが窺われる。
No.2 Daimyojinsawa SOMOKUTO (AD 1780)
This SOMOKUTO was erected in AD 1780 and, together with the Shiojidaira SOMOKUTO, is among the oldest confirmed examples.
It was originally located near Yunohana Bridge and was later relocated to its present site together with two other stone monuments.
At the top of the monument is carved the Sanskrit seed syllable “Un,” symbolizing Akshobhya Buddha. In the center is engraved the Buddhist verse:
“All grass, trees, and land attain Buddhahood.”
On the right side are inscribed the date August 1, 1780, and the name of the religious association. On the left side is inscribed “Kuchitazawa Village,” indicating the builders.
Among known SOMOKUTO, this monument is extremely rare in that only Buddhist scripture is inscribed on it, making it a valuable example.
The seed syllable and nearby stone monuments related to mountain pilgrimage indicate a strong influence of mountain worship in this area.
