本草木塔は、弘化2年（1845）の建立で、国道13号線に面した山の神神社の入り口の鳥居の脇に湯殿山と出羽三山塔とともに並立している。
碑文は、塔頂部に梵字（種子）の大日如来を意味する「ア」を置き、その下方に「草木供養塔」、向かって右側に「弘化二巳年」、左側に「8月8日」と刻まれている。日付の下に「東原寺」とあったとの記録もあるが、現在は判読できない。
万世地区に所在する江戸時代の草木塔は、すべて山の神神社の付近に所在しており、山の神信仰と深く結びついていることが窺われる。
No.14 Kariyasu SOMOKUTO (AD 1845)
This SOMOKUTO was erected in AD 1845 and stands beside the torii gate at the entrance of the Mountain Deity Shrine, facing National Route 13. It stands together with monuments dedicated to Mount Yudono and the Dewa Sanzan.
At the top is carved the Sanskrit seed syllable “A,” symbolizing Dainichi Nyorai. Below it is engraved “SOMOKUKUYOTO.” On the right side is inscribed “1845, Year of the Snake,” and on the left side “August 8.”
Records indicate that the name of Tōgen-ji Temple was once engraved below the date, but it is no longer legible.
All Edo-period SOMOKUTO in this district are located near the Mountain Deity Shrine, indicating a strong connection with mountain worship.
