本草木塔は、天保12年（1841）の建立で、山の神神社境内の石塔群の1つとして存在する。国道13号線の新設工事に伴い、神社とその周辺の石塔を現在地へと集約したとされるが、草木塔が当初所在していた位置については不明である。
碑文は、塔頂部に梵字（種子）の大日如来を意味する「ア」を置き、その下方に「山神惣木供養塔」、向かって右側に「天保12年」、左側に「辛丑九月吉日」、建立者である「村中」が刻まれている。碑文の「惣」は、本塔にのみみられる表記であり、同音の「草」と「すべての樹木」の意が込められているのであろうか。
万世地区に所在する江戸時代の草木塔は、すべて山の神神社の付近に所在しており、山の神信仰と深く結びついていることが窺われる。
No.13 Akahama SOMOKUTO (AD 1841)
This SOMOKUTO was erected in AD 1841 and stands among the stone monuments within the precincts of the Mountain Deity Shrine.
During the construction of National Route 13, the shrine and surrounding stone monuments were relocated to their present location. The original location of this SOMOKUTO is unknown.
At the top of the stone is carved the Sanskrit seed syllable “A,” symbolizing Dainichi Nyorai.
Below it is engraved “Mountain Deity SOMOKUKUYOTO.” On the right side is inscribed “1841,” and on the left side is inscribed “Auspicious Day, Ninth Month, Year of the Ox,” followed by “Entire Village.”
The character “Sō” used in the inscription is unique to this monument and is thought to convey both the meaning of “grass” and “all trees.”
All Edo-period SOMOKUTO in this district are located near the Mountain Deity Shrine, indicating a strong connection with mountain worship.
